It has to be well-timed though – not too close to the due date, and not to far as to whittle down the excitement. Baby showers are a pleasant surprise to expecting mothers. Over the past ten years, these five have become my favorite physics demonstrations demonstrating properties of matter and high vacuum physics.Of course, to get started, you’ll need a vacuum pump, high vacuum tubing with tubing clamps, a vacuum pump plate, and a good quality bell jar. It also doesn’t hurt to have some vacuum grease or petroleum jelly handy to lubricate and seal between the bell jar and the pump plate. And now onto the top five:5. Shaving Cream Expansion – Put a little dab (technical term) of shaving cream inside your bell jar (which is then sealed onto the pump plate), turn the pump on and watch the molecules spread themselves out and the Shaving Cream grows! Be careful not to let it run too much where you pull the Creme into the vacuum pump though!4. Grow a Balloon – place a balloon, filled a little bit and tied off inside your bell jar and turn the pump on. Students will be curious as to why the balloon expanded while the air is pulled from the chamber.3. Springtime (Easter) Peep Monster – place one of those terribly unhealthy, yet tasty, sugar coated marshmallows, THE PEEP, inside your bell jar. Turn on the pump and watch your baby peep turn into a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man peep!2. Did you hear a bell ringing? – place an electric bell or kitchen timer inside your chamber and turn on the pump. Make sure the bell is turned on! As the air molecules are pulled from the chamber, the sound will slowly disappear until it is gone! Great way to explain to students why an astronaut would never be heard if he were to start screaming while in outer space.1. Cool Boiling Water – My all time favorite. It is absolutely critical that your pump is a “high vacuum” pump and not just a vacuum pump. You’ll need to pull a much higher vacuum than the 25″ of mercury some pumps offer to do this. Place a plastic bottle or petri dish in the chamber filled about half way up with water. Demonstrate to your students that the water is at room temperature and not hot to the touch. Put it in the vacuum chamber, turn on the pump, and in no time you’ll have room temperature water simmering at a rapid boil. What better way to explain the effects on vapor points in different atmospheric pressure?You can do a quick search on the internet and find all of these supplies from virtually every science education dealer. One tip, keep an eye on your vacuum pump oil level and drain and change any contaminated oil. Be sure to use “High Vacuum Pump Oil” as standard vacuum oil or other “home remedy” solutions (See: motor oil, vegetable oil, etc) will not allow the pump to continue operating properly!

Military divorces are unique in many different ways. From residency requirements to laws that protect active military from being divorced without knowing it, there are many intricacies with military divorce in Florida.

First things first. If you want to get a divorce in Florida, one of the spouses must reside at least 6 months in the state before the filing of the petition. But with active military members often being stationed in various places around the country or across the world, establishing residency can be a bit tricky.

For example, what happens when a married military man from Texas is stationed in Florida and he wants to get divorced? Or what about when a military man from Florida is deployed to Iraq?

There are special laws to account for situations such as these in Florida.

If someone is an active military member, he or she can meet Florida’s 6 month residence requirement in two different ways:

1.    If he or she has actually resided in Florida for the past 6 months, even if it isn’t the person’s home state and they’re just deployed there.

Or

2.    If he or she establishes Florida as their home state because they have the intent to return to Florida after being discharged, regardless of where they are currently deployed.

If an active U.S. military member can meet the Florida residence requirements, a military divorce in Florida can be obtained. And remember, only one of the spouses needs to meet the residence requirements.

There are special laws in place for splitting military pensions between spouses. The Uniformed Services Former Spouses’ Protection Act gives state courts the right to distribute military retirement pay to a spouse or former spouse. These orders are enforced through the Department of Defense.

However, it’s important to note that spouse’s aren’t automatically entitled to a portion of the member’s military pension. This is something that the judge must award to them.

Furthermore, Florida has a law that says both child support and spousal support may not exceed 60 percent of a military member’s pay and allowances.

There are also laws in place that protect active military members from being held in default for not responding to a divorce action. This is designed to ensure that an active military member doesn’t get divorced without knowing about it. Divorces can be postponed for the entire time the active military member is on duty and for 60 days thereafter. If the military member wishes to get divorced, he or she can waive these rights so that the proceedings can move forward.

If you’re considering getting a military divorce in Florida, your first step should be to schedule a consultation with an experienced lawyer. Choose a lawyer than handles military divorces on a regular basis as you can be sure they understand the unique challenges involved in these cases. Make sure you also choose a lawyer you feel comfortable working with. You need someone on your side who you can trust to represent you properly while looking out for your best interest.

The music industry is undoubtedly one of the ‘sexiest’ fields in which to work, according to a recent survey by the editors of Time magazine. There are music industry jobs that require nearly any skill set that you can bring to the job, and the training required varies with each of the music industry jobs that may interest you. Here are some general guidelines for finding work in music industry jobs.

Love Music.

It’s not a prerequisite for music industry jobs, but loving music of any kind is a definite step in the right direction. While loving music may not be important in a record company accountant’s position, it’s practically required for anyone who works with artists or in promotion.

Check the qualifications for the job.

In general, most jobs in the music industry require at least a two year college degree – with the exception of performers who can get by without a degree if they have talent. Expect that the more involved the job, the higher your level of education and/or experience will need to be. A record promoter may need to demonstrate networking skills or developed contacts in the local music scene, for instance, and a contracts lawyer will obviously require a law degree. Music teachers working for the schools will need to have a teaching license as well as the demonstrated ability to play an instrument.

The best training is on the job training.

For positions like band manager, road work, publicists and promoters, the best training is through an internship or through your own work promoting and/or managing a band on your own. Some publicists and promoters come to the job from their own fanzines, or have developed a network of contacts in radio and advertising through their college or teen year extracurricular activities.

A degree in music is respected in many music industry jobs.

Colleges that specialize in music education like the Berklee School for the Performing Arts offer training in many different aspects of the music industry. You can study music and performance law, accounting for the music industry, and business management for music companies as well as composition, performance and other music-specific jobs.

Join the band.

One of the best training grounds for a career in orchestral music is your school or college band. If you’re already beyond the school years, take advantage of county and city music societies to both train your ear and keep in the practice of playing with others.

Music ministry jobs often require special certifications.

If you have a calling to a job in music ministry, you’ll find that many churches and synagogues require that their full time music minister have pastoral training as well as musical training. The American Guild of Organists and the National Council of Pastoral Musicians offer professional certifications at a number of levels.

Music therapists require a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from one of the approved universities that teach music therapy.

In addition to regular studies, the bachelors in music therapy requires 1200 hours of clinical practice.

The question of jurisdiction must be addressed before meaningful processes can be implemented to counteract the damage that online actions can have on the school system.The harms that are caused at the hands of students through cyber actions include marring the reputation of teachers and administrators, harassing other students and threatening the security of testing and other educational information. Similarly, educators often cause harm through their own cyber actions by using online forums in an inappropriate manner to the detriment of their school or district. These actions may compromise the safety and morals of their students and affect the integrity of the educational system itself. Yet any restriction on these actions runs the risk of violating constitutional rights of free speech and privacy. Needless to say, there is a careful and ever-evolving balancing process that needs to be maintained in this area of law. And the decisions of our courts and enactments of our legislatures must be monitored and influenced by educators and education law experts.The bullying laws that are springing up in local legislatures provide an excellent example of the issues at stake in this field. There is an important responsibility for governments to protect children from this new form of harassment. At the same time, however, in addition to the inevitable first amendment challenges, educators need to have a voice as to the practical limits on building level school personnel in implementing these new laws. These issues present a fascinating intersection of legal issues that will only become more relevant and topical in the decades to come. Research and analysis will be important in normalizing policy in the field. Ultimately statutory enactments and case decisions will  provide the law on these subjects.  However, these statutes and decisions are by no means immutable.  Like any other area of law, they evolve and change over time.  And these shifting principles are all the more prevalent in a field of law that is in its infancy such as this one.  There are no long-standing seminal court decisions on the topic, nor is there any conventional wisdom with respect to a proper statutory framework.  Therefore, in this field more than any other that I can think of within education law, there is a need for scholarly research and publication to help organize and shape the developing legal trends.
