The Piper Plays, You Dance . . . Or Do You

The Piper Plays, You Dance . . . Or Do You? by Connie H. DeutschAlthough I borrowed the idea for the title of this article from the story of the “Pied Piper of Hamelin,” the concept ends there. In the folk story, the piper plays a beguiling tune, dancing in the streets and leading the children out of Hamelin to their death, as an act of revenge for the townspeople reneging on their agreement to pay him for ridding the town of its rats. In this article, I am thinking of a different kind of injustice associated with dancing. It seems that if you are attending a dance party for the first time, no one wants to ask you to dance until they see you dancing with someone else first. The way it was explained to me was that the good dancers don’t want to risk their reputation by dancing with someone who makes them look bad. They also don’t want to waste their time on a beginner. When I suggested that they ask a beginner to dance and train them to do it correctly, I was told that it is a waste of time because the following week, seeing that the person could now dance well enough, their partner was now dancing with everyone but them.I remember when dances were just that. People went to these events to dance, to let their hair down and have fun. They didn’t have to be pretty or handsome or even dance particularly well. There was a bit of unself-consciousness that doesn’t seem to exist today. Nowadays, there is so much snobbery and fear that they might look foolish that it’s amazing that anyone can relax and enjoy themselves. What is even more amazing is that people seem to think if they accept a dance or ask for a dance that this is a prelude to a relationship. I’m told they don’t want the other person to get the wrong idea so they are very selective in their dance partners. They think nothing of refusing a dance for the dumbest of reasons and seem to think that five minutes of their time dancing with someone who might not make them look good on the dance floor, is reason enough to refuse them.It seems ridiculous that a person can’t spare five minutes to dance with someone who might not be a good dancer. It’s appalling to think that nowadays there are so many egotists that a dance, that takes less time to execute than the act of brushing one’s teeth, is such a sacrifice that people’s feelings have to be hurt because they might not dance well enough to showcase their partner’s wonderful abilities. The seventeen hundreds and eighteen hundreds may not have had the kind of lifestyle that I would find appealing today but ladies and gentlemen in those days were trained to be gracious. The men, usually by their mother’s prompting, would ask a plain-looking woman to dance. The women, trained by their mothers and by society, would not hurt a gentleman’s feelings by refusing a dance unless that man had committed an egregious impropriety (egregious by the standards of that era).I find it unacceptable that people today are so cavalier about the feelings of others that they ignore the simple rules of courtesy that common decency dictate. When people think nothing of hurting someone just because that person doesn’t measure up to his or her standards, that kind of boorish behavior is unacceptable in any era, in any society. It is an injustice, an act of mean-spiritedness to make someone feel unworthy, not too dissimilar to the actions of the townspeople in the “Pied Piper of Hamelin”. . . so, when the piper plays, make sure you dance.

Tramadol and cancer pain management

Cancer pain control

According to the World Health Organization guidelines for cancer pain management, Tramadol has been considered as safe and effective Step II analgesic. Tramadol is also known as “centrally-acting opioid analgesic” that works in the central nervous system and acts like morphine in the body to relieve pain. Mild-to-moderate cancer pain can be controlled with Tramadol alone or in combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Tramadol works by improving the transmission of chemical messages in your brain and spinal cord. Serotonin and norepinephrine are the two chemical messengers that work as a bridge between two nerve cells for transmission of messages. Tramadol inhibits the reuptake of these chemical messengers in nerve cells and thus allow messages to be transmitted without any interference. This improves pain-reducing effects and enhances mood lightening effects. Tramadol also activates the spinal pain inhibitory system to get effective pain relief treatment.

Tramadol dosage

Tramadol can be taken in two formulations, for extended release or for immediate release. For immediate release, a dose of 50mg and for extended release, doses of 100mg, 200mg, and 300mg are advised. Extended release doses are used for chronic pain and long-term treatment. Tramadol used for extended release should be taken as whole tablets and should not be split or crushed before taking them. The dosage instructions for this medication should be followed according to your doctor’s recommendation to prevent any side effects. The dose of Tramadol depends on the factors such as your age, your medical condition, other medications, and how your response to Tramadol.

Precautions before taking Tramadol

You should not take Tramadol, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Also, avoid this medication if you have a history of drug or alcohol addiction. Tramadol can have drug interactions, so if you are taking any other medications, you should inform your doctor in advance. You should also talk with your doctor, if you are suffering from any health condition, such as, seizures, liver disease, kidney disease, lung disease, and allergies.

Apart from its mild-to-moderate side effects, Tramadol is considered as one of the most tolerated pain medications. The side-effects are temporary in nature and can be avoided if used according to a doctor. It has been found that Tramadol can improve the overall health of a person over a period of time. It improves functions of the muscles and stiffness, in addition to pain relief. Ultracet is another analgesic used for short-term treatment of moderate-to-severe pain. It is a combination of two pain-relieving agents Tramadol and acetaminophen.

Treatment possibilities for colorectal cancer

In order to see how to treat colorectal cancer doctors must first stage the cancer. This can be made after three systems: Dukes, Astler-Coller and AJC/TNM.

The classification of cancer after AJC/TNM is:

Stage 0: the cancerous tumor affects only the inner layer of the colon or the rectal lining. The indicated treatment is surgery, for removing tumors and polyps. No further treatment is necessary.

Stage I: the tumor has spread deeply in the inner line of the colon or rectum but has not broken through the colon wall yet. The recommended treatment is surgery with no other additional treatment after the surgery.

Stage II: the tumor has broken through the colon wall but has not spread to the lymph nodes yet. Surgery is indicated and chemotherapy or radiotherapy is needed in some cases.

Stage III: the lymph nodes are affected by the tumor. In colon cancer chemotherapy is needed after surgery; in rectum cancer chemotherapy or radiotherapy is made before or after the surgery.

Stage IV: the cancer has spread and affected other organs like lungs and liver. In this case chemotherapy and radiotherapy will be applied both in order to stop the rectum from being blocked. Sometimes surgery will be needed in order to remove the tumors from the other affected organs.

Surgery for colon cancer refers to removing the cancerous part of the colon and then reconnecting the two ends of the colon. Also, the nearby lymph nodes and a part of the normal tissue will be removed too. Some of the early stages of colon cancer can be resolved during colonoscopy. The patient will recover after a period of time that varies with age, general health and the cancer’s extension.

Surgery for rectal cancer will be made after chemotherapy and radiotherapy if the cancer is in an advanced stage.

If the cancer is caused by polyps they must be removed by a procedure called Polypectomy. A local excision can be made in other cases and will remove superficial cancers from the inner layer of rectum along with some health tissue from nearby. Frequently a low anterior resection can be made in order to treat colorectal cancers but the tumor must not be situated very close to the anal sphincter. Other solutions are the abdominoperineal resection and in the most desperate cases when other organs are involved the pelvic exenteration will be applied.

Going to regularly check-ups and seeing your doctor from the first symptoms of colorectal cancer you can treat cancer from its beginnings, avoid complications during drastic therapy and recover faster from the disease.

Tips For Choosing The Optimal Wireless Audio Transmitter Device For Whole-House Audio Streaming

A growing number of wireless audio transmitter devices promise the ultimate freedom in streaming music all over the home. We will examine if these newest products are suitable for whole-house audio. Also, we will give important suggestions for choosing a wireless music system.

If your residence is not wired for audio then you face quite a problem when you want to get your music from your living room to your bedroom. Often the audio source cannot be moved. Running speaker wires between rooms will be costly and for that reason a lot of people are searching for alternatives. The following technologies are utilized by devices solving this problem: infrared, RF, wireless LAN and powerline.

Infrared wireless audio products are limited to line-of-sight applications, i.e. only operate within a single room because the signal is sent as infrared light which cannot go through walls. This technology is often found in wireless speaker kit products.

RF wireless products will send the signal as RF waves. These waves can without difficulty go through walls. RF wireless audio devices either utilize FM transmission or digital audio transmission. FM transmission is inexpensive but quite prone to noise, audio distortion and susceptible to interference.

Products utilizing digital wireless audio transmission, such as Amphony audio transmitter products, use a digital protocol in which the audio is converted to a digital signal prior to transmission. This conversion and transmission in the digital domain will make sure that the original audio quality is preserved. However, this is only the case of the data is sent uncompressed. Some wireless audio transmitters will apply some form of audio compression. Such products include Bluetooth audio transmitters. Audio compression will degrade the quality of the audio to some extent.

WLAN products are practical for broadcasting audio from a PC. However, wireless LAN was never designed for real-time audio streaming. As a result, products using WLAN will introduce some amount of delay to the signal. WLAN receivers usually require buying a separate LAN card to be plugged into each receiver.

Powerline products use the power mains as a medium to broadcast the audio. These products normally offer excellent range. However, they face problems if there are several separate mains circuits in the house. In this case the signal will have problems crossing between these circuits. Also, these products build in a delay of a number of seconds to safeguard against transmission errors during power surges and spikes which prevents their use in applications where the audio from wireless speakers has to be in sync with other non-wireless speakers or video.

Here are some hints for selecting a wireless audio system: If you plan to stream audio into several rooms of your home, be certain to pick a system that permits streaming to multiple receivers at the same time. That way you don’t have to buy a separate transmitter for each receiver that you are streaming to. Picking a product with some type of error correction will help mitigate against strong RF interference. Such interference can be caused by other wireless transmitters. Pick a digital RF transmitter to maintain the original audio quality, preferably one with an audio latency of less than 10 ms in case of video or other time-sensitive applications.

Make sure the wireless transmitter offers the audio inputs you require. You may need amplified speaker inputs, RCA audio inputs etc. Get a wireless system where you can buy separate receivers later on. You should verify that you can get receivers for all the different applications you have. Such receivers may include amplified receivers for passive speakers or line-level receivers for active speakers. If you go with a digital audio transmitter, select one with an input audio level control knob to prevent the audio signal from clipping inside the transmitter audio converter. This will guarantee optimum dynamic range regardless of the signal level of your equipment.

For high amplifier power efficiency and greatest sound quality, check that the amplified receiver has a built-in low-distortion digital amplifier. Make sure the receivers can drive speakers with your desired Ohm rating. Picking a product where the wireless receivers have a small footprint and easy mounting options will help in the course of the installation. Devices which work in the 5.8 GHz frequency band will have less problems with wireless interference than devices using the crowded 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz frequency band.

The Orders of Architecture

The principal legacy to the modern architect and decorator from the artists of Classic antiquity has been in the so-called “Orders of Architecture.” This name has led to some confusion in the mind of the layman. It is in reality a term meaning a column and entablature. The column is a support and the entablature is a structure which is supported. The orders were originated by the races of the Greek peninsula and their names have been given to designate the various types. The Dorians, Ionians, and Corinthians have given us the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders. The Greeks developed the proportions, ornamental pediment, and moldings of these architectural forms to the same high degree of perfection to which all other Grecian art forms were developed.

The Doric order was the heaviest in its aspect and is today used where it is necessary to express strength and vigor. The Ionic order was more graceful and was used where greater richness or splendor was desired. The Corinthian order of Greece was florid and was developed after the Ionic for greater richness than the latter could indicate. The orders as we use them in the majority of instances today are those that were developed by the Romans, who inherited the idea from the Greeks, and adapted it to their own use. With a more systematic mind than the Greeks and with mass and quantity of production to be considered in their fast expanding Empire, they debased the detail of the orders, hut systematized them to a formula so that lesser artists could reproduce them. They also introduced two additional orders. The Roman orders are known today as Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite. Standard proportions were established by the architect, Vitruvius, and were later re-established in the sixteenth century in Italy by Yignola. These proportions were based on the diameter of the column near its base compared with its height and are as follows: Tuscan column-”7 diameters high Doric column-”8 diameters high Ionic column-”9 diameters high Corinthian column-”10 diameters high Composite column-”10 diameters high The entablature in each ease was one-quarter the height of the column. Each column was divided into three parts, the base, shaft, and capital. Each entablature was also divided into three parts, the architrave, frieze, and cornice. While there were differences in detail in the moldings of all the orders for the corner guards and plinth blocks, the most obvious difference is noted in the capital of the columns. There is also a great difference in the shape of Greek and Roman moldings. All Greek curved moldings are irregular curves, designed by a free-hand stroke of the pen and especially studied for grace of form, silhouette, shade and shadow. Roman curved moldings are all parts of a circle that could be drawn by a compass by an untrained artisan. The principal Roman moldings are as follows: Fascia (a long straight line) Fillet (a short straight line) Torus (a semi circle) Ovolo (a quarter circle) Cyma (an ogee, or S-shaped molding) Scotia (two quarter circles of different diameters joined together) Both Roman and Greek moldings were enriched by a similar type of conventional ornament. The honeysuckle form of Greek decoration and the acanthus leaf of Roman formed a basis for a whole series of varied motifs. The water-leaf, egg-and-dart, and head motif were constantly used to enrich all the orders. The anthemion is common in Greek forms, while rineeaux, grotesques, dolphins, griffins, wreaths, ribbons, eagles, and masks cover Roman friezes. Color was used extensively to enrich both the exterior and interior of buildings. Brilliant examples of wall paintings have been found in Hereulaneum and Pompeii. These were rediscovered during the eighteenth century and had an immense influence upon the decoration and art of both France and England of that period. Strong primary colors were used in a semi-naturalistic, semi-fantastic representation of figures, architecture and landscape intermingled with vines, festoons and panels. The darker tones were used near the floor on structures such as wood stoves and wood fireplace inserts, while the chimneys and door toppers closer to the ceiling had lighter tones. Classical furniture was made in wood, metal and stone. The majority of wooden pieces have disappeared, but wall paintings show that they had turned legs and painted decorations. From ancient manuscripts we find that the furnishing of the palaces of the emperors was extravagantly rich. The rarest of materials were used. Gold, silver and precious stones adorned the chairs, couches and tables. The metal furniture sometimes had metal supports turned in imitation of wooden ones. The best, however, had supports patterned after animal legs and feet. Table tops were usually in marble. Allison Ryan is a freelance marketing writer from San Diego, CA. Viral Book Marketing

Drew Gerber recently blogged about the YouTube top ten viral videos for 2010. Drew cited Katherine Tasheff, Executive Director of Digital Media and Marketing at Hyperion as identifying three common elements of viral videos which are authenticity, connection and visceral. In other words they should “speak” to the viewer on a human level; touch them emotionally using humor, sympathy (pathos) or surprise; and it should be something they want to share. This is not as easy as it sounds but it is a good objective for any video project and by doing so may have the result of reaching viral status. However all this talk about viral video risks making people who have more modest success seem inadequate. The virals very often are not product related. They are typically people doing goofy stuff. The only way to increase your business or sell more product from them is to advertise over them. But what if you could get one thousand or ten thousand potential readers watch your video? Not viral status but a nice step toward getting your book in the hands of potential readers. Most independent book promoters such as self published authors and small publishers do not have the resources to create an outrageous video that may draw attention to the video but not really to their book. The first thing book sellers need is a book video trailer that engages their potential reader and is produced to help the reader decide if this is a book they want to buy or know more about. In the realm of marketing I think the viral video is akin to a publicity stunt. When it is achieved it is good for drawing attention to a brand and is best suited for consumer products that have a broad base of potential customers. Those marketers who are operating within a niche would be better served to use a more conventional marketing approach which is to know who your potential client is and communicate directly with them. Use video to communicate with that market and pay attention to the three points above, as they are good rules regarding any video communication in general.

Therapeutic Massage Ease Hurts Faster

In my many life experiences, my first massage was not all it could have been. Having had more massages than my first one, I realize, it actually is great. I was the subject of a lady who was learning. I worked at a health club and she needed volunteers. I, as the low person on the totem pole, was elected to be it. I had no idea what a therapeutic massage involved. Well, this was no therapeutic massage. I had to put up with the noise of two rowdy little boys while their mother practiced on me! I opted for the clothes-on option! Yes, there is a no-clothes option which involves the subject being nude, but covered by towels and blankets. The more I learn about massage in general, the more differences I find between regular spa and therapeutic massage. A day massage (with a professional rather than an intern) is just to feel good, relaxed, even peaceful. In my learning, I have realized that there are so many massages available, so many techniques, even a pregnancy massage! If only I had known. It is all a very civilized affair. Massage is the manipulation of superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue. This is done to enhance function and promote relaxation and well-being. This became popular in the US in the 1800′s and grew in popularity until the 1930′s and 40′s. The development of modern medicine discounted the benefits of therapeutic massage. It made a re-appearance in the 1960′s and 1970′s when nurses began to use it to alleviate pain in patients. In the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta massage was deemed a core medical service. A therapeutic massage goes deeper into a person’s current and past medical complaints. These are performed in a clinic, hospital or private office, and there is a lot more paperwork involved than there is with a spa massage. The masseuse will ask many questions and interviews involved. This is not your massage as only luxury. It is one that will help relieve problems. It may be performed up to 3 times a week, which is very frequent for massage. It is unbelievable the number of complaints that can be treated with therapeutic massage. It treats fibromyalgia, aches and pains, cancer, pediatric issues such as autism and Downs syndrome. It treats sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, whiplash, TMJ and posture problems as well as weight issues. To me, this is amazing and fabulous. Before seeking massage, it is helpful to consult your doctor. He/she can refer you to a massage therapist. Acupuncture (a form of massage) can be sought as a treatment for eczema. My sister in Australia, has had many, many issues when she first moved there with her husband. She now has a little daughter, her eczema has cleared up, even the scars on her face have diminished. I couldn’t believe it. She looks great and is crediting that to her massage therapy. As a mother of three dancing girls, I hope their muscles and bones hold up to the impact it may have on their bodies. I know that therapeutic massage will help keep them in condition to dance. Therapeutic massage sure beats some of the other options, shots of hormones and antibiotics!

The Most Troubling Issues to be Addressed When Considering Death and Dying

Euthanasia, or “physician assisted suicide,” is a particularly troubling issue to this writer. Recently, advocates and lobbyists have changed their argument for legalizing euthanasia from suicide as a relief from pain, to suicide as an issue of personal choice. At first this seems benign, especially in a culture where personal choice is already connected to the beginning of life. However, countries that legalize euthanasia tend to adapt their policies quickly, including the Netherlands, where in the short span of seven years, the Euthanasia Act has come to include protocol for euthanizing infants (Finlay, 2009). This may not be as unusual as it sounds, since even in the text used for this class, the author cited research questioning the validity of spending large amounts of money to keep premature infants alive (Feldman, 2008).

Help For Those Addressing These Issues Personally or in Caring for a Family Member

Just like in other areas of life, the Bible can be a central focus for dealing with the issues of death and dying. A person’s relationship with God makes all the difference both in their eternal destination and in the approach a counselor should use when addressing these situations. While the Bible says that followers of Christ have nothing to fear in death (1 Corinthians 4:16-18; 5:8, New American Standard Version), it does indicate that open expressions of grief both before and after the event are appropriate (Psalm 119:28; Romans 12:15, Genesis 50, etc.). Preparation for death can also be helpful. In Scripture, parents often blessed their children as their death neared (Genesis 49), and parents today can alleviate some strain on their children by making their wishes known ahead of time (Khodyakov & Carr, 2009).
